As soon as your new reptile comes home, give us a call. We will work with you to establish a safe and heathy habitat for them. Bring photos of your current habitat and we will evaluate and make recommendations to maximize your pet’s surroundings for its optimal health and to maximize its environmental stimulation. We can test your UVB light, give nutritional counseling and recommendations for overall care and good health.
Preventive Exams
Regular preventive exams ensure your reptile’s overall health is good. Just like a dog or cat, your reptile needs a regular preventative nose-to-tail physical exam. A physical exam at Ridglea West Animal Hospital includes a check of skeletal, respiratory, and cardiac systems with a limited neurological exam. In any exam, we give you the opportunity to share and update us on any habitat and/or nutritional concerns you have. The smallest changes in the environment of your reptile can have a big effect on their well-being.
Diagnostic Testing
When necessary, we can perform many types of tests to diagnose your pet. Our testing capability is including but not limited to:
- intestinal parasites (yes, they get “worms” and zoonotic diseases)
- blood test for wellness and disease
- radiographs for diagnosis of injury or Metabolic Bone Disease (MBD)
- check to determine the sex of your reptile
Care for Sick Reptiles
We are also equipped to provide treatment for your sick reptile. We have treatment protocols for different types of illnesses from respiratory infections to Metabolic Bone Disease to temperature/light/nutrition deficiencies. Reptiles can also require surgery for tumor removal, wound repair, laparotomy, or ingestion of a foreign body.
