Look for Xylitol renamed as Birch Sugar or Birch Sap in food products
An article by the Colorado State University Veterinary Teaching School has a report of importance that we want to share with dog parents.
Many of our pet parents know that xylitol is extremely toxic to their dogs, but they do not recognize the term “Birch Sugar” or “Birch Sap”. We encourage you check your labels of “sugar free” products such as chewing gum, candy, and desserts, tooth and mouth care products, and peanut butter for these words.
If your dog does ingest any product with xylitol, birch sugar, or birch sap in it, it is a medical emergency. Treatment includes inducing vomiting in the patient and then using blood testing to monitor the effects on the liver.
